How to translate Japanese videos to English in real time

To follow a Japanese video, livestream or talk while it plays, a real-time translator like YTVT (Your Voice Translated) listens to the audio in your Chrome or Edge tab and speaks it in English a short delay behind the speaker, with optional English subtitles. It helps when there are no English subtitles to turn on, and there is no file to upload or download.

Common questions

Can I translate Japanese videos into English for free?
To try it, yes: you get 15 free minutes once your email address is verified. They are given once and do not renew; after that you need a paid plan.
Which video sites does it work on?
It works when the video plays in a Chrome or Edge tab and the site lets extensions capture its audio, which is the case on common video and livestream sites. Protected videos on some subscription services do not allow it.
Do I have to play the Japanese audio into a microphone?
No. YTVT translates the audio playing in your browser tab, not your microphone, so you can use headphones.
Does it work with Japanese livestreams?
Yes, as long as the stream plays in a Chrome or Edge tab and the site lets extensions capture its audio. Protected videos may not.
